Who started World War I

Hi guys, I am planning to revive my blog again by posting new things not only book reviews.

Today, I shall be addressing the controversy on who started World War I.

Serbia or Austria

Let’s start off with Serbia

Most people think that Serbia started World War I since Gavrilo Princip a man from Serbia killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand when he was riding in his open carriage vehicle with his wife Sophie the Duchess of Hohenberg. Princip and his five other men were severely injured the Archduke as a part of the group called the Black Hand; Princip was also from the group called Young Bosnia. The Black Hand was controlled by the Serbian government it wasn’t just some random group like you’re portraying. They created young Bosnia as a proxy for their terrorist acts. The assassination still didn’t directly lead to the declaration of war rather the refusal of the Serbian government to let Austrians investigate the assassination and find the ring leader that was the direct cause and the Serbians refused this request even while their allies Russia were telling them they should accept.

This resulted in many people believing that Serbia started the war, mainly due to one of their assassinators killing the archduke of Austria-Hungary.

Now onto Austria-Hungary

Austria-Hungary was declared by many to start off World War I mainly because they were the ones who declared the war itself, when many believed that they could have handled it in a more mature manner. Austria created an ultimatum at Serbia because they did not want their citizens to be taken away by Austrians since the assassination. Also, despite other countries telling Austria not to start a war in order to maintain the peace going on in Europe, Austria relentlessly started a war resulting in the whole continent going in chaos. This lead also to the triple alliance forming with Germany, Austria, and Italy against the rest or Europe. Many people say that the Archduke was not liked anyways so it was okay for the Serbians to kill him, but I do not believe this is one of the main reasons.

Comment down below who you believe started the war, Austria or Hungary!

  1. Welcome back!
Well articulated! The sequence of steps provided paints a better understanding that Austria started the war though they felt instigated by Serbia’s refused response to their request for further investigation.
My question is what other alternatives they could have opted that could have resulted in peaceful mitigation?
