Soul
Joe, a regular music teacher has a hard time trying to make the kids enjoy the art of music. The problem was that Joe had auditioned for a spot in a band with Dorothea Williams, an extremely famous musician. He eventually got the part, and while he was running home, he fell down a manhole. After Joe’s near lethal fall, he was sent into the Great Beyond. The Great Beyond is a place with a cosmic foyer with a long walkway, where souls line up before heading toward a white light. Joe isn’t ready for The End, so he flees in the other direction, falls off the walkway, and ends up in a brightly colored yet still-purgatorial zone known as The Great Before. The purpose of the Great Before is to mentor fresh souls so that they can discover a “spark” that will drive them to a happy and productive life down on earth. Joe is motivated mainly by a desire to avoid the white light and get back to earth somehow (and play that amazing gig he’d been waiting his whole life for), so he assumes the identity of an acclaimed Swedish psychologist and mentors a problem blip known only by her number, 22. 22 has never gotten her badge for a long time, even Abraham Lincoln and Mother Teresa had failed in getting 22 to Earth.
So, Joe decides to help 22 find her spark, he tries everything available, and eventually gives up, claiming there’s no way to do so. Then, he falls out of the Great Before, along with 22 in the form of a therapy cat, while 22 gets Joe’s body. Joe who had the soul of 22 wants to explore the earth now that she’s in it and decides to just roam around the place. Terry the soul keeper, who makes sure the number of souls is right, figures that Joe is missing so he sets out to find Joe and brings him back to the Great Before along with 22. Joe heads back to Earth and has a successful performance with the Dorothea Quartet in the form of himself. The experience, however, is not as fulfilling as Joe expected; worse, he might have to repeat the same routine night after night. Realizing his senseless and selfish ways with 22, he decides to return the badge. Inspired by the objects she collected while in his body, Joe plays the piano to enter the zone and look for 22, who has become a lost soul. Using a small maple seed 22 had kept, Joe convinces her that she is ready to live, returning her to normal. With her badge back, 22 finally enters Earth, with Joe accompanying her for as long as he can. When Joe was going to the Great Beyond Terry greets him, and gives him another chance to live, so Joe used every moment of life preciously after that.
Overall, Soul is a great movie which is very emotional through times, I recommend you grab a bucket of popcorn and start watching!
Interesting story! 22 sounds like my favorite character of the movie.
